The Hidden Spear?

During the wars of the Crusaders around the 10th century the Catholic armies had captured and occupied the ancient city of Antioch. This city was taken and lost in battle several times over a 200 year span of death, plunder and blood. There came a time when the Crusaders from Catholic Europe had full possession of the fortress city and the Moslem hoards were once again up in arms and besieging the city. It looked bad for the Crusaders and their courage and spirits were very low and things looked bad.

Then one of their monks announced to the Crusaders that in this ancient city the very “Spear” that had pierced the side of Christ was known to be buried somewhere inside the city. And if they could find this Spear, they would receive great strength and the victory would be theirs over the surrounding armies. Of course an immediate search began for this sacred spear. After a few days of intense digging, they so happened to find this special Roman spear from long past. They rejoiced and somehow managed to regain their confidence and the next day opened the gates to the city and began filing out to meet the surrounding enemy…carrying the Spear!

This was a very unusual maneuver for the Crusaders to take, rather bold and the Moslem chief hesitated because he thought this was some type of a trap. In his hesitation, the Crusaders grew bold and advanced against the surrounding armies and due to the mixed signals and the lack of attack orders by the Moslem chief the surrounding soldiers began to flee and the Crusaders took the victory this day. The thing that none of the Crusaders knew was that this very smart but cunning monk had actually buried some old Spear he had found laying around and made up the story of it being the one that pierced Christ.

This true story shows us the power of thought and how men can build hope on relics that in actuality carry no power, no strength and nothing worth trusting in. It also shows us how mans mind can be manipulated to produce confidence. However, so often this confidence in NOTHING leads to nothing and eventually the Crusaders, these very same men were all destroyed and the Catholic Europeans were totally defeated by the Moslem armies…relics, Spear and all!
