Searching For Values

Times, back in the old country were tough, making any work hard to come by, yet my father the baker Barnado Zazulac of our village Yeastdoegrad needed a young worker to help out. Of course, due to the difficulties throughout the land this job would be prized among the wanting families, but my father only wanted the most honest and trustworthy soul to work within our family business. For our resources were limited, our name respected and he knew that honest souls were hard to come by, and often worth their weight in gold!

One day my father the baker sent for 20 of the poorest children in the village and said to them, "Here you are dear young folks, in this basket is a loaf of bread for each of you. Take one and come back every day and I'll give you what I can if there be any left from the days sales."

Immediately the youngsters began grabbing and quarreling about who would get the largest loaf. Pushing and snatching from the basket, most of them left without even thanking my father. But there was one, a Katreena Mehailavna, a shy and poorly dressed young girl who had patiently waited until the others had left, she then picked up the smallest remaining loaf, bowed slightly in thanks to the baker my father and went home.

The next day the scene was repeated. Thereafter when Katreena's mother sliced her little loaf, she curiously found several shiny silver coins inside. When Katreena brought the money back to our bakery and handed it over to my father, he said, "No, my child it was not a mistake, I put them into the smallest loaf to find a trustworthy soul who might want a place in our Bakery, so would you like to work with my family in becoming a helper and maybe in time a real good baker?"

A wise person is cautious in who he allows into his sphere of friendship, no less someone who will deal directly with his reputation, through business or association. I learned that my father, more than a wise baker, sought after the least greedy, and the most trustworthy individual, knowing that his own resources were limited and that honesty and worthiness were values, most often hidden in the humble soul.

Greed first eliminated the multitudes, and testing revealed honesty!

Greed is one of the most obvious and destructive human traits, and can easily lead a person into various areas of discord and corruption. So we might say, that my father the baker excused himself and his family from many unnecessary troubles, that GREED would have otherwise invited to our doorstep! But instead, he wisely beckoned into his life...HONESTY, a valued quality, for any and all friendships!

By the way, I eventually married Katreena that very honest soul and those simple principles which my father saw in her, have brought a peace and humility to our lives, every since!
