Rich Friendships

 It was hard to come by loyal friends in the mid 1800’s during the California gold rush. Men were just too suspicious, to much of in a hurry to get rich and pay any mind to others, no less take the time out to bury a fellow gold minor with dignity. But not the case here, two good men wanted to do all they could by paying their last respects to a good friend, who had worked with them for many months and took ill and died. Besides, William was the one who always kept them going, inspiring everyone with hope that they would one day be rich, as long as they kept trying and did one another right.

Months of hard work had not paid much back to the three friends and when William died their hopes seemed to be going into the grave with their good old friend. The least they could do was dig a decent grave and hire a preacher to say some pertinent words for their old inspiring friend. This just about took the last bit of strength out of them, and for sure, by the time they paid the preacher, nothing would be left for them to live on and how could they go on? They worked the night through digging the hard rocky ground because the preacher was expected in the morning. Dawn came and soon the preacher showed up on horseback and the friends wrapped William in his blankets and laid their dearly departed friend to rest in the hard rocky ground. There they stood with the sun rising at their backs and the preacher saying his final words over the grave. As they stood there with bowed heads looking down into the grave the morning sun began to reflect a glimmer down into the whole. As the preacher spoke out his last “Amen,” the two loving friends were immediately down in the grave inspecting the glittering rocks and sure enough, they done struck it rich!

Just goes to prove, take care of your friends and they will take care of you…and this is love and its PAYBACKS!
