Responsible Nature?

It was a peaceful autumn day when a distant sound broke the stillness of the afternoon. If you were near it would have been Indistinct at first but the noise grew in amplification until a muffled flapping of wings filled the air. Gleaming black feathered crows approached from an adjacent field, soared high over a golden oak grove and descended into a corn field and began feeding on remnant corn left behind from the years harvest. Soon Dozens of their feathered companions followed the first crows, gliding past a narrow stream to join their comrades on the ground, chattering noisily among themselves. But all were not involved in the company's activity. Two special chosen sentry crows sat on a topmost branch of a nearby dead tree, guarding the group. They had the responsibility of watching, warning and at any given moment they were to squawk out the alarm for possible danger. It was the duty of these two sentinels to give an alarm at the slightest indication of an intrusion. The rest of the birds continued foraging among the trampled stalks and husks for whatever corn might have been left behind. The two sentinels, assuming that their feeding site was free from danger, became careless in their vigil. But their inattention was not without consequence!

Then and there, without notice another sound of carefully placed steps of an intruder blended with the chatter of the feeding birds as the afternoon sun extended lengthening shadows from the base of the tall dense oaks. The intruder skirted the grove of huge shadowing oaks cautiously and then silently crept forward. The threatening intruder grew closer and closer to the field, but the sentries were preoccupied and failed to notice his approach. The warning that should have been was not, and the crows remained unaware of the unauthorized spectator. Suddenly, the stranger was heard cracking a corn stock by one of the birds on the ground, and a scream of alarm was taken up by one crow after another. Almost as a unit, the entire flock took to wing, but they did not fly away as the intruder had expected. To his amazement they began diving viciously in attack against the two sentries. The unreliable guards were torn to shreds by sharp beaks and claws in a brief but brutal battle. Justice was delivered swiftly for their failure to watch and warn. The flock could not afford to tolerate such irresponsibility, and to ensure that the sentries would never again be in a position to jeopardize their safety, they were swiftly and cruelly dealt with and totally eliminated!

This is a harsh example but a most important lesson for all those who seek to step into the realm of responsibility. Any position of accountability carries with it some degree of consequence. Before anyone attains respect for carrying out an assignment of accountability he or she first must understand that their failure to fulfill or carry out their task might result in putting others at risk or endangering more than just themselves. Like it or not, responsibility comes in many forms and we should learn to uphold our word, our agreements and most of all our responsibility to all those who might look to us for Security, safety and guidance!
