The good old farm boy Yakov brought home his sweet city bride Sarah, and together they began their wonderful country life. Just like any other young bride, Sarah so wanted to please her husband and impress her new family and friends, she immediately began applying her campaign of skills in home care and various other domestic abilities. Sarah couldn't wait, for Yakov was gone to the city to collect his relatives and so on this perfect day she set out to bake some exclusive breads and pastries for her new family guests who were soon to arrive for a weeks stay and a great family get together. Of course Sarah wanted her breads and pastries to be very special but for some unexplained reason while preparing her dough, she kept on making mistakes with her mixtures. Darn it, it must be the temperature she thought. But to hide her waste and blunders, irritated Sarah would walk out into the back yard and tossed the ruined batches out into the farm pond, hoping no one would ever know! By late afternoon, Sarah went out to feed all the animals and in utter astonishment, discovered that all of their Geese were scattered, laying around DEAD! This was horrible, beyond her comprehension, and surely, she thought that they had died because they had eaten her wasted dough, now what the heck was she going to do? However, Yakov's young bride, even though she was more than baffled and upset over this tragic loss was still a wise and thrifty wife. And of course, knowing her husband would be very proud of her abilities, Sarah thought to salvage something from this disaster. So then and there, she began to pluck out the dead geese's feathers and down, to be used later in pillows and beds. After completing this miserable task she wearily piled up all the DEAD GEESE in the middle of the yard, to await their burial by her soon to arrive husband. Low and behold, when her Yakov arrived home with all the family guests, they were more than amused at the sight that greeted them. They were certainly puzzled, and you might say, more like astonished! For as they climbed out of the car, right then and there, they were greeted by a flock of shamefully NAKED GEESE, staggering around the front yard in a drunken stupor! Everyone stood in amazement, trying to understand, what in the world were they seeing? What the heck kind of a farmer was Yakov anyways? Young wife Sarah was wondering what all the commotion and laughter was about outside, and with no further delays Yakov's proud wife came out to investigate the uproar, and with bulging eyes, a gasping shock, she stood there and witnessed for herself, the amazing restoration of life, to all of their once DEAD GEESE! When things finally settled down and after hearing Sarah's hesitant story of dough and feathers, the astonished listeners, and chuckling on lookers could only be entertained, by what turned out to be a very unusual tale of circumstances. For Sarah had cast out her "dough" into the pond, unmindful on how the yeast would ferment and become an intoxicant to the hungry Geese. After the curious geese were done eating their fill, the dough fermented inside them and the birds became intoxicated and passed out DEAD in the yard. Of course, poor Sarah could have only drawn one conclusion and thought that they had somehow been poisoned by her mistakes, and never suspected that her lovely Geese were "pie eyed drunk!" |

What moral or analogy could we possibly attach to this humors true story? None that I know, except that life is full of surprises and if we now and then stumble into them, let our hearts be lifted up with the joy of that experience. We could lay fault upon poor Sarah for her inadequate knowledge of chemistry, or blame "animal instinct" upon the dumb Geese for a shameful exposition of reckless drunkenness! But in humor, the Geese did survived the season in shame, and someone named Yakov did get a new Goose down feather bed out of this episode! Contact Author at: |
