The Big Miss?
During the second World War a patrol of American soldiers had penetrated deep into enemy territory and came upon a small green valley where a group of Germans were hold out. It was a very pleasant spring day, the grass was green and flowers were growing up around the small house in the meadow. Birds sang and the fragrance of nature was strong in their nostrils.
As they observed the house a German youth came out from the house and began walking around playing a harmonica. He just walked around in the meadow and played various tunes. Soon he sat down and was just enjoying the sunshine and the outdoors. The hidden soldiers watched this young man for a long while but duty called and soon the entire patrol took aim at this young man as he played. The captain whispered orders to shoot and all at once ten rifles went off at once. Dust sprang up all around him, but the youth jumped into the air and fled for the safety of the house…he was not even touched by one bullet!
Now as the story goes, it was not that these marksmen from the patrol were bad shots, it was something else. Somehow in that moment of time, the war was set aside and feelings of simple life and a spring day entered into the factor and all together they were touched by the freedom and the playing of this mans tunes and all together they decided that they could not destroy this moment and what the enemy youth represented for each of them. It was an unspoken decision on each of their parts to not commit such a dastardly deed. So intentionally, each man just shot off his mark a hair so that he would not carry the guilt of killing such freedom and from destroying a possible reminder of what they held to be good.
So we see here that there is a natural instinct within humans which offers humanity some HOPE! Hope that the memory of good might one day force the conscience of nations to reconsider their DEADLY AIMS! “ And what is that Good?”
