Our Favorite Landlady

Due to many unforeseen turns in life, it was tough for our family and we had to sell our home and look around for a house that we might rent or lease for the next few years until we got back onto our feet. By accident or by destiny, we still are trying to discern that, we somehow managed to come to know a woman named Mrs. Loais Biasi who was moving out of her house into a smaller home, for her husband was ill and could no longer maintain their small country property.

She seemed to take a liking to us, maybe it was her own personal struggles with life that helped establish our relationship, but the rent was very fair and we were more than happy with our new dwelling.

There was one small catch that went along with this blessing; the land lady wanted two months rent and another 500 dollars up front for a safety deposit. We were rather stretched to our financial limits but borrowed the money from our in laws and so moved into the house. The landlady was extremely nice and we made sure we did more than our share of the upkeep and slowly repaired many of the areas around the house and yards. It really was a nice setting and our family was more than grateful for this woman's kindness and we really knew we had a friend in our corner for once.

We slowly became friends and ended up living in her house for over ten years. The day came when she decided to sell her property and offered it to us at fair market value. But due to our family situations, our bills and other circumstances we were in no position to even think about purchasing her house. But then something really interesting took place. Just as we were starting to shop around for another place to live, our landlady came by one day and near to the end of our conversation she took out and envelope and handed it over to us. She said that this was our original clean up and rental deposit and it might come in handy for us. She smiled and said her regular good-byes and told us we would be seeing her soon.

After she had gone my wife opened the envelope and with a puzzled expression of, "What the heck," stared at the check for a long time. I impatiently asked her, "What was wrong, did we use up our deposit or something?"

Then my wife calmly handed the check over to me and said, "This check is made out for $128,000 dollars!" I laughed, "Just our luck, "two" extra zeros, another mistake to get excited about."

Well, I called my landlady back and she happily told me that it was no mistake. I asked her how this could possibly be, saying that "I know you're a more than a good person, but you don't have to be that good!"

Suitably, she went on to explain something that changed our lives forever and taught us a lesson in both friendships and investments. When we had handed over our $1950.00 dollars some ten years back our landlady had the habit of just taking all deposit money and purchasing some unusual stock with it. So this is what she had done with ours.

It so happened that she bought a good number of some crazy Internet stock called Yahoo! With her many individual investments she had not really kept tract of it but just recently checked our account out and was very surprise with this one. She had done the same with all her other renters, and this was the best that her many purchases had done.

As a result, we sent our land lady to Hawaii for a week, bought her house and I have now become an investor in stocks and bonds. I have since gone to school and gained needed training in handling our money! Along with this, I have used my wonderful land ladies idea for other property owners who invest their renters deposits in unusual stocks and altogether we sing out YAHOO!
