The Con and the Judge!

Once upon a time, on a lazy afternoon a young man was walking along the road and happened upon a woven bag of fine leather just laying in the dust. Upon opening the purse he found eighty gold shekels and a note stating that if this purse happened to be found that a reward of twenty shekels would be given to the person returning it to the rightful owner, listed there upon the note. The young man went straight to the given address and immediately inquired for the rightful owner of the purse. An older, rather rough looking man invited the youth into his home whereupon he took possession of the purse and quickly opened it and poured forth its contents. The man counted out the shekels and with great depravation looked up at the youth and asked him if he had already taken possession of his reward of twenty shekels. "Certainly not Sir, I read the note and came directly here to return your monies." "Well boy, there is twenty shekels missing, because when I lost the purse this morning there was one hundred shekels inside." The young man tried to assure the elderly man that he did not take it but the man sternly accused him and demanded that he immediately return the twenty shekels. The youth was adamant about his honesty but the man threatened and persisted and told the youth that unless he paid, that he would take him before the village magistrate. The boy had no choice, for he certainly did not have the money to pay the accusers demands and so bowed his head and told the man to take him before the dreaded magistrate.

The case was told to the wise old judge of the village and after questioning the youth the judge turned to the accuser and said, "Now there friend, you say that this young man took your twenty shekels and you want it back." “Yes I do, it is mine and he took it from my purse," declared the old man. "According to your statement, your purse had one hundred shekels in it and this one only has eighty, and the youth says he did not take it, so my judgment is that this must not be your purse and so the youth shall retain this purse and the eighty shekels until someone claims it." "But that is mine," cried out the accuser, "you can’t do that!" "Oh Sir, I can do just this, for the youth was honest enough to immediately return the purse to you and would have been satisfied with the least reward, and this indicates to me that he is telling the truth, but on the other hand, I suspect that it is you who are seeking the payment of twenty shekels from this youth of an honest heart but since this cannot be your purse, you must wait for another honest soul to find your lost purse with one hundred shekels in it!"

Moral: Rejoice when justice is served well, but it is easier to find a shifty con than a just judge!
