The Horse That Won The Day!
The Cossack leader Dobrinian fearlessly led his mounton tribe into a one sided battle with the Russian invaders from out of the north. The Cossack riders were so far out numbered by men and horses, that even the Russian General Kastrikin admitted that it would be better for the mountain Cossack tribe to just commit suicide rather than fight to the fierce death for nothing. True enough, there on a Georgian high plain the Russian forces soon surrounded the wild Cossacks which had come to meet this powerful army with its small band of fearless warriors. Kastrikin had to acknowledge that these mountain warriors were not like any he had ever encountered and beyond their bravery , he so wanted to possess a few of their most fantastic horses. Not just a few, but he was willing to spare the tribe its total destruction for the sake of possibly retrieving its horses. For among the Cossacks of the southern steps of Russia, their horses and horsemanship was unequalled anywhere on earth. The Russian army had often witnessed the brilliance and skill of these incredible riders and how their horses would perform extraordinary maneuvering to assist its gallant rider to either escape or astonish his enemies into making mistakes. Once, General Kastrikin had seen a Cossack rider as if fake a retreat on his horse and as the Russian horsemen chased him, he suddenly reversed his horse in an instant and completely surprised his pursuers.
Then there was a time when a rider was galloping away full speed with a number of soldiers after him when he literally turned around in his saddle and from his position facing backwards, he began to shoot a volley of arrows so fast and accurate that most of the pursuing riders were killed or fell back. He had also heard of Cossack riders faking being shot off their horse at full gallop and roll off one side of the horse but somehow pull himself under their running horse and come up shooting on the other side and the horse never skipped a beat. There were many stories of these mountain tribes and of their extraordinary horses but Kastrikin was tired of stories, he wanted to possess some of them now. Beyond his minor victory, Kastrikin wanted those horses for his own personal status and stables.
Soon the Cossack tribe was surrounded and the Russians had carefully subdued these few wild tribesmen, hoping to preserve their horses rather than having them slain in battle. Finally the Cossack leader, Dobrinian was captured and brought before General Kastrikin and of course, with him came his fine and noble horse. These horses were said to have blood lines reaching as far back as Solomon's stables. This thought alone excited the Russian General and his horsemen to take great care to obtain such a prize, which they now had!
After the dust of battle had settled, the General ordered Dobrinian's horse brought to him. Truly, Kastrikin thought this had to be one of the most magnificent animals he had ever seen. It was soon saddled with his own saddle and made ready for the Generals first ride. He mounted the fiery animal as Dobrinian stood and watched. The General urged the animal to move forward and it did but when he tried to make it gallop it refused. After a good deal of whipping and prodding it still would not obey the General. This spectacle went on for some time until Dobrinian snapped out a shrill whistle and the horse leaped into motion and came to him…with the General on its back! This really irked the General and so ordered his guards to handcuff Dobrinian and put him on the back of the horse so that he could teach him how to control this noble beast. Within a few moments, Dobrinian was sitting up behind the General and giving orders to his horse, and sure enough, it handled just beautifully. The General put the animal through many steps and maneuvers and as all seemed to be going well, until Dobrinian suddenly gave the horse a very different command. Unexpectedly, the horse bounded into a run and leaped through the circle of surrounding horses and both Dobrinian and General Kastrikin were off and flying across the valley and headed for the mountains. Half the Russian army was now in pursuit, but they were not able to shoot because they were afraid they might hit their General. They tried to catch up with this magnificent animal but the horse was nearly out of sight in moments.
The General did everything possible just to hold on, as this tremendous animal leaped over rocks and bounded up steep hills and slowly left the armies behind. The horse never slowed, never lost footing and it was not long before it had completely lost all its pursuers. General Kastrikin soon found himself in the midst of the mounton tribesmen village and there he was taken prisoner. Dobrinian, with all his leadership ability soon had the General drinking hot chi, eating roasted lamb, and as a friendly gesture of new relationships gave General Kastrikin an equal horse in beauty and in spirit. The Russian General was then escorted back to his army where the remaining Cossacks were released and a new understanding between Russia and the Cossack warriors began. So we now know how a horse saved the day! Sometimes men will do anything to possess something, and once they get their hands on their desires, somehow their desires run away with them and end up possessing them instead!
