Hook-up on Hook!
It was in a deep Canadian lake high in the Rocky Mountains (Kootenay Lake) where they hold an annual fishing contest and no doubt, there are some huge world trophy trout pulled out once a year. On one such occasion I ventured forth and paid my fee, launched my boat and away I went. After two days of really intense fishing for the BIG ONE I unexpectedly hooked into what seemed to be a trophy fish but after twenty minutes of strong fighting it broke my line and escaped, and left me rather upset to say the least!
Without a doubt, I was rather pained over my loss and it was time for me to return home but not without an oath to return next year! The next year I brought my good luck charm, my lovely wife, and was totally psyched that this year I would do somewhat better. Again I registered for the great trophy contest, paid our fees and away we went again. Somewhere into the third day, my wife’s pole took the bite and the fight was on. For over an hour she played her fish and I worked the boat for her. Up and down the lakes edge , in and out of the curves all the time trying to wear this fish down to where we might net it. Once again, there was that near loss but just by luck or maybe by skill my wife managed to keep the fish on. Finally after much patient effort she had our fish in sight and O WOW, it was something else!
Cautiously I worked the boat near to the monster and with shaking arms and very intense emotions I netted that great fish and slowly lifted it into the boat. For sure we were excited and thought that we might have had a chance at the big prize with this one! We were truly amazed at the size of this monster but were further amazed at something we saw. After examining the great catch I saw that her hook was not actually stuck in the fishes flesh but was hooked directly through the eye of another hook which was stuck deeper into the fishes mouth.
The story didn’t stop here but it got even more unbelievable when after examining the old lure and hook I saw that it was my very same setup from the year before, the one I had lost on my first year tournament try!! It might have been better for me to never tell this part of our catch, for even though our fish was running near to the top in the competition for the seasons World Trophy, the judges disqualified our fish because of the means by which it was caught! The stupid hook was not actually into the flesh of the fish itself, but only hooked into another hook! Tell me about rule and I will tell you about upset!
But my wife, my real good luck charm, being of a calm and understanding nature brought my pain under control with great doses of her earthy philosophy, which I can’t even remember at this time. But it was something to do about “Wonders, mystery and strange!” Now of course, my wife forever is bringing this most unusual incident up whenever we have a difference, reminding me of what a good team we make, no matter what the judges might rule! I retort, ”Never again will I tell!” My wife adds, “Never again will you need too!”
