Where are you GROWING?
How many times have we heard or been told to “Grow Up!” Hey, this is just fine, no doubt, we all will grow up, this is life in motion and time waits for no one! But how we grow, and what we accomplish in our lives makes a big difference rather than just growing up. How we grow, what we fulfill, and the mark we leave might prove more valuable to our existence than just passing time, day by day and year by year! It takes time to grow up, why not fill up that time with worth while experiences, wise thoughts, blessings and the best of all time has to offer? Just as all societies recognize the significance of trees, so too with children. A tree is made up of many parts, so too are we. A child is like unto a tree, it can be twisted bent or stunted early in its development. Most reasonable minds always ask, “Does my life really make a difference?” No matter who you are, no matter where you live and no matter how difficult or how light your life might be, each of us will, can and do make a difference in this world! Beautiful are the trees of the land, grand are the forests of a nation and blessed are we to possess such grandeur! Sorrowful is the land where the forests once grew and pitiful are the people who's trees once were!
Deserts and waste lands now cover vast areas where great forests once stood. By useless wars, needless destruction and senseless abuse, the lush and vigorous coverings of the earth have been plundered. But still the magnificent TREE stands among us in all its glory, teaching us to appreciate the Creators peaceful and wise handiwork! They stand as living witnesses to a marvelous mind which designed such works of wood, fiber and foliage! Trees are many things to many people, temples, homes and friends, acknowledged inventions of pleasant symmetry and complex workings, but since ancient times, acknowledged as one of the earths tireless "factories!" Forever working for the good of earth and humanity, all without complaint and with no reward!
A tree is generally defined as an erect PLANT with a single woody stem capable of reaching heights of at least 20 25 feet at maturity. Depending on environmental conditions and age, however, some tree species may exhibit growth forms characteristic of SHRUBS and VINES. Trees dominate the ecosystem because they grow to large sizes and live for many years. For example, the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, attains the greatest height 368 feet of any tree species. The Sierra redwood, Sequoiadendron giganteum, has the largest diameter, reaching 30 feet. Although relatively short, the bristlecone pine, Pinus aristata, is one of the oldest trees known, attaining the age of about 4,600 years, which far exceeds the life span of 100 to 250 years of most trees.
The simple growth rings on a tree can reveal past events, great climatic changes and in a way, foretell the future. This might seem a little far out but with a simple observation of the existing, recorded rings in these trees, science can go back centuries. They can determine the cycles and duration of past droughts, thereby predicting reoccurring climatic changes, all by the size, shape and make up of the tree rings.
They can discover in what year ancient volcanoes erupted and cast their ash into the atmosphere, settling onto the tree and then becoming a part of its growth rings. Bugs, insects and even arrow heads have been found in these ancient rings. It is incredible the story a tree can tell. Science uses the tree growth rings of trees to tell the past stories; For example, the bristlecone pine, Pinus aristata, which is one of the oldest trees known and can really tell the story.
What a story a seemingly simple pine stump could tell, with its 4000 rings of annual growth. One of the outermost rings immediately takes us to the landing of the Pilgrims in America. A few more rings carries us back to Columbus and the discovery of the new world. Count back from there: 1300, 1000, 900, you are still only at the First Crusade. Keep on counting, back to the time of Mohammed, and to Alaric who was sacking a fallen humbled Rome, then onto the height of the Roman empire. Year by year your eyes will be sore and strained before you get back to the year when this lusty American tree was yet a young giant. When it was only half grown the Chinese were just inventing paper. When it was sending out its branches, Pompeii, the pride of cities, was buried under the ashes of Vesuvius. As the tree reached into the light and had already planted hundreds of other trees, the worlds calendar went from BC to AD! Further yet, back we go counting rings, Alexander the Great and the Greek empire. Egypt, Moses and possibly unto the time of the worlds ancient patriarchs. Truly, this is a record of fantastic proportions!
What does all this have to do with us? Well, we might say that our lives too, are like unto trees, leaving a recorded history behind. We might not live as long as a tree but our days record the passing of time. We too carry with us the events of our time, the effects of change and we stand waiting to tell the passing story. Let us remember that nothing is accomplished in a day and that our lives are like unto trees, they will record time and others may read our story somewhere in the future, so let us grow wisely.
