Custom and Conflict |
|
There has never been a Nation or Culture without customs of some sort and we know that every custom is up for interpretation. Consequently this eastern European tradition ran into some modern day interpretation at a time when meanings were hard to come by, and leaves us wondering. A rich man dies and his family gathers from all places to see him off. Now one of the customs was that his near friends or family were to place money in the coffin as a gesture of good bye and final gratitude. His three well to do sons finally arrived and in tradition they pass by their fathers coffin. The first son who was a banker passes by and drops in a Five Hundred Dollar Bill. The second son who was a politician goes by and drops in a Thousand Dollar bill and the third son who was a lawyer, comes up and takes a moment and writes out a check for Two Thousand Dollars and drops it in the coffin…and picks up the OTHER TWO BILLS!!! It was said, that the rich father actually SMILED at his wise and well trained son! * Moral: If your going to start a tradition, better to know up front that your tradition can grow into something much greater than you ever thought. And understand that there will come a day when others will use that tradition to their advantage or to your discredit! Be careful in the traditions you create for yourself and for the future. Now here is a challenge: Think up THREE TRADITIONS you would like to establish in your family or among your friends. Then project those traditions 100 years into the future! Could they grow into something more than you expected? Could they turn into something harmful to others? Might they change the world or those who might follow after them? What could they do to improve life? Contact Author at: |
