The Ways of COMPASSION!
BACK WHEN, long ago in old rugged Russia there existed a village of sober and hard working people as we might desire to know. Just like everywhere else, very little went on without everyone knowing and one day, concerned attention was brought to one father about his son. It was sad to say, but the son was caught drinking on more than one occasion and even though the father had disciplined and punished his son, the son continued falling back into this temptation. After several shameful experiences the boy put forth a greater effort to keep his word and remain sober. However, one day, word came to the father that his son was drunk again and had gotten into a fight down at the black smiths shop. The father went in great shame, to retrieve his drunken and disobedient son and in front of everyone THREATENED HIM with stern consequences to his actions! Then and there, the father with great indignation declared his words, “if you are caught drunk again, I will break a heavy board over your head!" Once again, the son straightened out and seemed to be doing well, until a villager came to the house reporting that the son was down at the iron works, drunk again! The father knew that he had given his word before the entire village and would now be expected to keep it. Sure enough, as the shamed father walked along the village street he picked up a long thick board and placed it over his shoulder. When he arrived at the black smiths shop many villagers stood around waiting for the father and the promised beating, which the son so well deserved! The anguished father arrived to find his son falling and staggering around in a drunken stupor. While his son lay looking up at his father, through blurry eyes, the father stared down pitifully upon his son, but by his word, he slowly raised the heavy board over his head and was just about to bring it down, when suddenly, the father himself groaned and fell to the ground. He was suddenly stricken down, his back had gone out and now he lay helpless beside his drunken son too. The villagers now assisted both the helpless father and the drunken son home. Once at home, the son had sobered up rather quickly, knowing that his father had been stricken down on his account. Nonetheless, the father recovered immediately and the son soon realized that his father had only PRETENDED that his back had gone out, just before bringing the board down and striking him. He realized at that moment how great his fathers love for him was and from that day forward, he never drank again and grew to become a very respected man in the village!
