THE PROUD CAPTAIN!
The DARK SEA in all its power and mystery rolled its never ending waves beneath the ship as the night settled itself upon all the sky. The ships course had been charted and all matters of the night had been assigned. The proud Captain finished his evening meal and went to his quarters. Soon there came a message and it was reported that another ships light had been seen directly ahead on their course. The light on the horizon seemed to be coming towards them, on the same designated course. The Captain impatiently ordered his signalman to tell the on-coming ship to turn ten degrees to the north. This order was sent and soon there was a return message from the other light in the night. It suggested that the Captain, turn his course ten degrees to the south. The Captain now arose in anger and went to the bridge, where his communication officer began to speak but the enraged captain dramatically cut his officers words off and demanded the other ship, "To turn ten degrees to the north or south, and tell them this is the Captain!" Beyond the exchanges, the two lights in the night still drew closer together on their certain collision course. The concerned officer sent the Captains message and soon again, there was a simple reply. "I think it best that you turn your ship ten degrees to the north or the south and the sooner the better!" The proud and now enraged Captain, waved his arms and bellowed out to the signal man, "TELL THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!! SHIP TO GET OUT OF MY WAY, FOR I AM A MIGHTY BATTLE SHIP AND WE ARE COMING THROUGH!" Immediately, the communications officer nervously sent the Captains COMMANDS and within a few moments there returned this message. "DEAR CAPTAIN OF THE MIGHTY BATTLESHIP, I AM ONLY A LOWLY FIRST MATE SEAMAN, BUT I AM A “LIGHT-HOUSE” TOO, SO YOU DECIDE WHAT COURSE YOU DESIRE?"
This humorous narrative could serve to shine its light onto all authoritative and proud characters, which are sometimes brought into the light of humility…just in time! In some way or another, it seems as though everyone has some type of authority, may it be by rank, name, wealth, family occupation or just personal prestige. From the smile of a youth unto the iron fist of a stern leader, there exists that part of each person, which will undoubtedly find a way to exercise its authority in one form or another. For our entertainment, in this case of the Captain and the lighthouse, the lower ranked soul with far less power, was so wonderfully allowed to enlighten this mighty captain in the night. Pride coupled with authority is a very dangerous mixture to find ones self extolled or afflicted with. From the playgrounds to the hall of assembled leaders, pride will most likely be there to lead men into shame. However, authority demands to be exercised for the sake of direction. Although pride, in some cases is not bad, referring to accomplishments or personal feeling but it could be very destructive in the heart of those who use it to exalt themselves, by brandishing their RANK! Just as the misjudgment on the Captains part was inflamed by his authority, and so brought him into the gallery of SHAME! Authority coupled with uncontrolled pride will manifest in many forms and can be as dangerous as fire or maybe even worse, especially united in the wrong life. We can observe leadership abilities in youth at an early age, and the abuse of power certainly can exist there too. There are few people that have not tasted the bitter whip of someone’s pride or over done authority. We should always consider this a serious matter within our own realm of responsibility. If we do rule a ship or a home, let us not navigate our vessels and precious crews with destructive PRIDE, into IMMOVABLE LIGHTS. Certainly not after honest suggestion has been duly offered, by LESSER OPINIONS!
