The Tale Of Two Barbers
The father and his young son made the long trek from their mountain ranch over the dusty road but only when necessity commanded the long haul into their small country town of Silverton. On these occasions, the father would always pay visit to one of the two barber shops in town and restore himself unto humanity by getting a well overdo haircut. The shops were around the corner from one another, and on this visit, after getting their seasonal hair cuts, the son thought to inquire of his Pa. "I was wondering Pa, why is it that we always pay visit to the one barber shop for hair cuts and not the other one?" The boy quickly added, "Specially when the other barbers hair is done so neat and our barbers hair is always looking like lightening done struck cactus!" They stepped off the boarded walk and waited for a noisy back firing truck to crawl by and walked towards their own beat up truck parked along the rutted street. "Don't yua think it would be better to have our hair cuts dunn by the barber who looks the most fitten," young Jake asked his Pa. "Well boy," Pa waited until they reached the truck and stood for a moment with his hand on the door handle before answering further. "First off, never be fooled by anyone's looks!" Then his Pa asked, "You know that there's only two barbers in town, ain't that so?" "Yes Pa, that's so," answered the curious Jake. Then the father went on, "If there be only two barbers in town, then who do you reckon cuts the other barbers hair?"
Jake stood leaning over the truck bed thinking it over, then spoke up surprised like, as though he got a bulls eye, first shot in the county fair. "If there be only two barbers in town, then I 'spose that one barber must cut the other barbers hair." Pa thumped the side of the old truck and pulled open the door as he replied, "You got that one right boy," They both slid into their places and Pa asked, "Who do you reckon gave our barber that struck cactus look?" Pa swatted at a few flies bothering his face and cranked over the motor a few times while Jake began saying, "Well Pa, if it wasn't his stormin wife, then it musta been the barber we paid no visit to, the slick one!"
After several cranks the motor caught and began puffing up some smoke through the floor boards, "Boy, you got that right too," Pa said smoothly as he ground his floor shift around looking for the right gear. The boy waited for the grinding to settle into a greased notch then looking proudly at his Pa he asked, "How didju figure that one out Pa?" Pa tossed a look over his shoulder before he let out the clutch and as the truck jerked forward Pa glanced over at his son and smiled out his answer, "Experience boy, experience!" Heat and dust slowly filled the cab as they bumped along main street, crossed the Silver Creek and Pa added, "It's known to be experience boy!" The road smoothed out towards the bluffs as the neat looking twosome left the town behind them for another long spell in the hills. Old Pa was saying, "Boy, you got to learn in your days that things just ain't always just what you see up front!" The road turned up towards the hills and Pa ground more gear as he tried getting the shift into second, then continued, "You got to figure a little deeper than looks and maybe you won't end up looking like an old struck cactus too!"
They were both laughing over the lesson taught and the experience gained, while the truck crawled along the curves of the first long hill towards home and another season of lonely ranchin!
